Debra Nerys, LMSW
I have a Master of Social Work and Specialist in Aging Certificate from the University of
Michigan, and for 30+ years, it has been my privilege to support older adults through
many aging-related challenges, such as: chronic health issues, life transitions and
related changing roles and responsibilities, care partnering/caregiving, grief and loss
issues, cognitive changes, depression, anxiety and trauma. My experience spans a
variety of settings: hospitals, rehab facilities, adult day programs, private homes,
residential continuum of care settings, and dementia care communities.
My specialty has been serving individuals with dementia, their care partners/caregivers
and family members, and my professional knowledge was profoundly challenged and
strengthened when my own husband was diagnosed with Younger Onset Alzheimer’s.
This life-changing experience has granted me unique insight into the challenges of
dementia care partners/caregivers, from initial diagnosis through end-of-life and after,
and all of the many complexities in between.
I have found that an individualized, integrative strength-based approach is helpful with a
focus on well-being and resilience. Whether you are actively caregiving, looking back on
your caregiving experience, or faced with other very real challenges in your life, I will
provide a safe and compassionate space in which to help you find ways to “be well.” I
look forward to meeting you to honor your unique experience, and I will not only listen,
but truly “hear” you.
